Lessons from a Stray
Yesterday evening I met this little girl outside of a garage that we had dropped Jerry's car off to get some things installed. I tried for about 15 minutes to earn her trust be she wouldn't come to me. I'd get close and she'd run away.
Some people may think "Ew it's feral, don't touch it." Or go on about rabies but honestly I am fearless when it comes to this kind of stuff. Heck I have climbed high into barn lofts to catch a kitten just to pet and love them just to realize how high I actually climbed and then call for help because I am deathly afraid of heights.
Anyway, she was curious and I threw a couple of twigs in her direction and start bouncing my keys around trying to get her closer. That sounded bad... I was bouncing the twigs around moving them quickly and then throwing them in the middle of the two of us. That way it would have my scent on it. Today however, she got closer.. she really had a thing for my keys today.
Then she was close enough and I could finally pet her! Victory!!!
Then she sat next to me and loved the way it felt to be pet.
She was all about the belly rubs!
So what exactly crossed my mind when I was earning her trust? Aside from "Can I keep her! Can I keep her!?"
1) All bonds are built on trust. Without it, you have nothing.
2) Trust isn't given, it is earned.
3) No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted.
4) Character is how you treat those who can do nothing for you.
5) What you do makes a difference. But you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.
Have a good night everyone! By the way, even by extending a hand once a day to a living being in anyway makes a difference. One person can make a difference.
